Troubleshoot: Trace a message

Steps in this Topic

Occasionally, a message seems to be sent without any issues, yet it doesn’t reach the intended recipient. If this occurs, you should check if the message was received by Exchange Online and determine if it was possibly rejected.

When sending emails using Microsoft Graph, the message is first submitted to Microsoft’s unified API (Microsoft Graph) and then internally routed to your Exchange Online tenant.

Perform the following steps to trace a message.

  • Start by sending a test email and confirm that it didn’t reach the intended recipient.
  • Navigate to your Exchange admin center > Message flow > Message trace.
  • Select the option Messages sent from my primary domain in the last day. A panel will appear to define a query to narrow down the results when searching for the message in question. In the example below, all emails sent by ellen[at]wpo365.com today will be returned (you would need to replace the sender with the account that you configured to submit messages to Microsoft Graph).
  • Find the email that you wish to examine and click to select it. A new panel will appear, with information on the message’s status and whether it was delivered.
